Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon has announced he will not contest the next General Elections.
The Fine Gael TD has cited an increased level of toxicity and online abuse as major factors in his decison to leave politics after a career spanning 20 years.
Deputy Cannon was first elected to Galway County Council in 2004 before becoming a TD in 2011, serving as Minister of State for the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Education.
Speaking to Galway Talks, Deputy Cannon explains how the changing face of politics has contributed to his decision:

A Fianna Fail Councillor has called on Galway City Council Recreation and Amenity to prioritise pitch drainage on the East Side of the City.
Councillor Alan Cheevers says that capital sports funding allocated from the last round of capital sports funding for pitch drainage for Ballybane and Doughiska has not been drawn down up to a total of €300,000.
He added that the pitches are vital to local sports clubs.
Speaking to Galway Bay FM News, Councillor Cheevers said that the money is there for the work to be done.

East Galway is to get funding to develop tourism in the area. 
The funding will be through the EU Just Transition Fund whose objective is to support the regions and communities in Europe that are most negatively affected by the transition away from peat production. 
Failte Ireland has requested funding for the midlands and East Galway, more specifically the Ballinasloe Municipal District is eligible for that funding. 
An activator for the funding is currently being recruited and will be in place shortly. 
Speaking to Galway Bay FM, the Tourism Officer for Galway County Council John Neary explained that this funding will develop the former Peatlands in the area into a destination of note globally.

Blue Teapot Theatre Company is set to represent Ireland at a renowned film festival in the UK on St Patrick's Day. 
Its documentary is nominated  in the Best Story of a Life category at the Oska Bright Film Festival, the world's leading festival for films featuring people with intellectual disabilities or autism.
'Enquire Within' explores employment from the perspective of young people, seniors, and those with disabilities living in Connemara. 
Jason Scott, Ensemble Coordinator at Blue Teapot, says it's great the documentary was so well received across the pond.

The entrance to Loughrea Health Centre isn't "fit for purpose" - because it's extremely inaccessible for people with disabilities. 
That's according to local Councillor Declan Kelly, who says the doors swing out, and wheelchairs also can't access the footpath. 
He says considering the money poured into the HSE, it's disappointing that something as simple as an entrance still can't be done right. 
Councillor Kelly told David Nevin it's not good enough.
