The Government has opposed a bill in the Seanad which seeks to stop the decommissioning of Derrybrien Wind Farm.
The 70-turbine wind farm was shut down by the EU in the aftermath of a peat-slide which resulted in large scale pollution, including the killing of some 50,000 fish.
Senator Michael McDowell led proceedings at the bill's Second Stage last evening, saying further environmental damage by the wind farm is unlikely.
Speaking in reaction, Senator McDowell, says locals are behind their bill, and pleaded with Government to change its mind:

Roads across Galway are in a "dire" state - and it's an ongoing struggle to try and maintain them as they are. 
That was the consensus at a meeting of Galway County Council, where it was agreed to write to Government demanding more funds. 
The meeting heard that the €40m allocated for Galway roads this year isn't nearly enough to cover the 9,000km of road network in the county. 
Despite some positive spin in the media, that's just a one percent increase on the figure for last year. 
Councillor Mary Hoade says it's not enough - has never been enough - and millions more is desperately needed.

A call has been made for Galway City Council to look into a new playground facility for the areas of Terryland and the Tuam Road.
Councillor Alan Cheevers has put forward a proposal to the council to look into funding forwards such a facility.
It follows various representations to Councillor Cheevers from residents with young children living in those areas.
Councillor Cheevers also says that whille there's currently a playground in Ballinfoyle, it doesn't accommodate everyone.

A small group of lecturers have gathered outside ATU Galway in the past hour as part of a national protest over working conditions
The Teachers Union of Ireland says lecturers in certain parts of the country are not paid equally to those doing the same job in Dublin.
There are 4 thousand 600 TUI members working at technological universities nationwide, and 92 per cent say they will take industrial action if needed.
Our reporters Sarah Slevin and Joshua Byrne spoke to these lecturers outside ATU about their main concerns:
