There's a lot of "misunderstanding and misinformation" in the public space about asylum seekers.
That's according to Galway West TD Eamon O' Cuiv, who was speaking during a Dáil debate on International Protection Applicants.
He said certain aspects of the system are very frustrating, and traditionally the system has been extremely slow.
Deputy O' Cuiv also acknowledged pressures on our housing stock and health service, and said both need to be tackled with the utmost sense of urgency.
But he said asylum seekers make up a very small amount of the overall number of people coming into the country every year.

It looks like the end is in sight for a long-running saga over a pipe that's continuously bursting in Belclare.
The pipe, between Carheens and Caltra, has burst multiple times in recent years, causing widespread water outages in the local area.
Councillor Andrew Reddington has expressed his frustration on each occasion, at the alleged lack of urgency on a permanent solution.
He says at long last, Uisce Eireann has informed him that 2km of pipe mains are to be replaced this year.

There's a call for a more focused plan on the future development of Claregalway.
At a meeting at County Hall this week, Councillor David Collins said consideration should be given to an ambulance base and fire station in the village.
He said despite being a very rapidly growing area, it previously had failed to meet the criteria for a specific town plan.
Council management gave a commitment that they would look at a specific plan for Claregalway at some point in the future.
Councillor Collins says the demand is there - as shown by the population increase in recent years
