Community Alert Groups are being urged to be more proactive coming into winter.
That was the message coming out of last night's public meeting in Loughrea, hosted by the County Joint Policing Committee.
With a 33% increase in the amount of burglaries carried out in County Galway compared to this time last year, it was noted that action needs to be taken to ensure these groups are efficient coming into the winter.
The infrequency of texts going out to the public to advise them of suspicious or criminal activity in certain areas was a focal point of the meeting.
Sergeant Michael Walsh, Garda Crime Prevention Officer, says it's not just up to the Gardaí and that everyone needs to take action:

Disappointment is being expressed after a very poor public turnout at this year’s Joint Policing Committee meeting.
Of the six members of the public to sign in at the Meadow Court Hotel in Loughrea, just one of them shared their concerns with the JPC.
The annual meeting is held specifically for people to question the committee on problems that affect the policing of County Galway.

Around a hundred local cyclists will be safer on our roads after Galway Cycling Campaign's Light Up Your Bike Initiative
The volunteer group gave out up to 100 free bike lights last night by Wards Corner Shop on the Canal Road.
The scheme funded by Galway City Council has allocated 500 lights for the campaign, to encourage road safety across the city and county

It's when products or services marketed to women cost more than the male alternative.

The first in-person votes will be cast tonight in the elections for the next President and Deputy President of the Irish Farmers Association.
Ardrahan farmer Pat Murphy is one of the candidates for the deputy position. 
The first 80 AGMs of the IFA's 940 branches nationwide will take place tonight - though farmers now also have the option of postal votes. 
Chair of the Galway branch of the IFA is Stephen Canavan.

A public meeting will take place in the city on Friday to discuss the actions of Israel in Gaza. 
It's hosted by People Before Profit, and the meeting is entitled "Stop Israeli Oppression". 
Speakers will include Palestinian human rights activist and legal researcher Ramez Hayek. 
It will take place on Friday at 6.30pm at Áras na nGael, Dominick Street.  
Speaking to Galway Talks, organiser Adrian Curran said our Government should be doing more to condemn Israel.

Galway Cycling Campaign will be handing out free lights this evening as part of the Light Up Your Bike initiative.
The campaign will be at Ward's corner shop by the Canal Road Junction from 5:30 to 6:30 this evening.
The  campaign is funded in partnership with Galway City Council.
