Tuam area councillor Donagh Killilea has claimed that libraries in Galway are significantly under-funded.
The Fianna Fáil councillor says the average spend per book in Galway is 55 cent, while nationally the average is €4 per book.
Councillor Killilea is pushing for at least a 100 percent increase in funding for Galway libraries for the next council term - regardless of who is re-elected after June 7th.
He says Galway is eight times below the national average, and that needs to change:

The village of Claregalway needs and deserves a bypass like the one recently delivered in Moycullen.
That's the message delivered by Senator Sean Kyne in the Seanad, as he spoke about the positive transformation the project has brought about.
It comes as Galway County Council has recently made a fresh funding application to get the ball rolling on the long-awaited Claregalway bypass.
But Senator Kyne said we've heard that countless times since 2008 - and noted Transport Minister Eamon Ryan isn't "overly enamoured" with new roads.
Senator Kyne said more concrete clarity is needed - and reflected on what the Moycullen Bypass has achieved.

The Audiology Clinic will be up and running in Tuam Primary Care Centre by the beginning of August.
The Head of Primary Care Services has confirmed to Galway East TD Sean Canney that it's currently being installed, and equipment has been ordered.
The testing equipment will be state of the art and will help with dealing with the more complex needs of patients
Independent TD Canney says this is another step foward for Tuam health services:

The first ever Irish patient has been implanted with an Irish-developed 'sensor' to help protect their heart at University Hospital Galway
The successful procedure marks the first human trial of a device which could positively impact people living with heart failure and alleviate the burden on hospital emergency rooms
It will allow patients to monitor their heart with a device at home, similar to how glucose-monitors have transformed diabetes care.

Passengers who were on-board a flight that experienced severe turbulence on the way to Dublin say people were screaming during the ordeal.
The Qatar Airways flight from Doha hit turbulence over Turkey yesterday morning.
12 people were injured - eight of them were taken to hospital after the plane landed at Dublin airport yesterday afternoon.
Passenger Philomena Prendergast from Galway, who was on the last leg of a trip from Australia with family members, says the incident unfolded around an hour and a half into the flight when crew were serving meals.
She describes what it felt like on-board:

At the final meeting of the current county council, there was extensive discussion on attempts made to have works done over the years.
But those efforts have seemingly proved fruitless in the case of junctions at Balroebuck, Grange and Cloughanover.
