A city councillor is calling for Criminal Assets Bureau money to be ringfenced into setting up youth hubs and programmes. 
At a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee this week, Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan Cheevers made the suggestion following a report from Detective Superintendent Shame Cummins.
The report showed that significant seizures are being made regularly in Galway. 
Councillor Alan Cheevers says that money taken from crime should be ringfenced and invested into youth hubs and youth projects that could make a real difference in communities.

A Campaign to make Galway City Autism Friendly launches this evening in the Clybaun Hotel in Knocknacarra.
The Campaign is a joint initiative between Galway Autism Partnership and As I Am, Ireland's Autism Charity. It will make Galway one of the first cities in Europe to be Autism Friendly.
The evening will also see the launch of the Four Peaks Challenge, where a group will attempt to climb Ireland's four highest peaks in the space of twenty four hours headed by adventurer Fergus Farrell.
The funds raised will be shared equally between As I Am and Ability West.
The general manager of Galway Autism Partnership is Máire Bríd Ní Chonghaile. She says that there is great energy and excitement around the initiative.

The "penny hasn't dropped" with the Government when it comes to the importance of meaningful climate action
That's according to Galway West Deputy Catherine Connolly, who spoke in the Dáil on the Citizen Assembly's Report on Biodiversity Loss.
She welcomed the report and it's 86 recommendations to the Government - but noted a total "misalignment" between Government policy and action.
Deputy Connolly gave a local example as she turned to Galway City - and said the city council isn't getting the funding needed to enact biodiversity and climate plans.

A major boost is in store for two transport projects in Galway after they've been added to a major EU Transport network.
Galway Port and the planned Athenry-Claremorris rail line are now included in the Ten-T network, following a vote in the European Parliament this week.
It means the two projects will now be eligible for funding under the Connecting Europe Facility.

Food delivery cyclists in Galway are to receive a warning from Gardaí over what's been described as 'unsafe' road behaviour.
Independent City Central Councillor Mike Cubbard was given the committment when he brought the issue up at this week's City Joint Policing Committee.
He says pedestrians in particular are at risk, noting numerous reports of near misses on footpaths.

There are calls for more recycling options in the West of Galway City.
Councillor Alan Curran has pointed out there's only one free recycling centre in the city for larger, awkward household items, and it's on the Tuam Road.
He also notes that while the centre at Liosbán Industrial estate disposes of most waste, it cannot dispose of hazardous items such as old paint cans and household chemicals.
