Well-known entrepeneur Jarlath Feeney has announced he will run as an independent candidate in Galway City West in the upcoming local elections.
Mr. Feeney is a former CEO of Galway Chamber, former manager of Galway Airport, and a founding member of Galway Technology Centre. 
His priorities include investment in affordable housing, enhanced bus services, expanding walking and cycling lanes, and making Galway a sustainable city. 
Speaking to Galway Talks, Jarlath Feeney said there needs to be much better forward planning at Galway City Council.

A Galway city private student accommodation provider has reversed its planned 30 percent fee hike.
Over a thousand students signed an online petition calling for Hubble Living, on Headford Road, to roll back on their fee increase.
Some students were facing a yearly rent increase of €2,500, which prompted the Students' Union to set up the petition and contact local representatives.
The accommodation provider has now emailed residents saying that following 'feedback', it will not be proceeding with renovation works - which were linked to the fee hikes.
Students' Union President Dean Kenny says while it's good news, the bigger picture of student housing is still dire:

There's frustration over paused active travel projects in areas such as Portumna, which would provide safer routes for locals.
Councillor Declan Kelly is requesting urgent funding for a pedestrian crossing on St. Joseph's Road, which had been included in a planned project.
The Independent Ireland Councillor says the project was ready to move to design stage, but the NTA has halted it, and funding won't be available for the foreseeable future.
Councillor Kelly says the Government needs to get their priorities right and provide the funding needed to get projects like this done:

Galway East Independent TD Sean Canney has confirmed he will support Simon Harris in this morning's Dáil vote on the next Taoiseach. 
Deputy Canney met with Simon Harris last week, but says he only made up his mind this morning, hours ahead of the vote. 
He feels stability is important right now, given the domestic and global challenges we face. 
Deputy Canney told Galway Talks there's one particular project he's very keen to see brought forward under the current Government.
